Types of Traffic School and What it Means

These days, if you have gotten a traffic citation or ticket that allows for the attendance of traffic school, you have many options on the ways in which you can attend the class. You may still attend a class in the day or evening that is held at a local traffic school service, comedy traffic school, or even online traffic school. No matter which option you take, as long as you take the course from an accredited traffic school that is recognized by your state and complete the course with a passing grade, you will usually reduce the amount of your citation fine, prevent points from being added to your license, and could even avoid an increase in your insurance premium.

Traffic school is an important part of dealing with serious and minor moving traffic violations. It is easy to forget that when you get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle you are not only taking your life into your own hands, but the lives of everyone else out on the road as well. Traffic school is meant to retrain current drivers on the traffic laws and the importance of safety including defensive driving. It is the aim of every traffic school instructor to send drivers back out onto the road with an increased knowledge of traffic rules and laws and to never see those same drivers in their class again!

Currently, the most popular form of traffic school is online traffic school. With an online traffic school, you can take the four hour course online from the comfort of your own home or office while fitting it into your busy schedule. In fact, with most online traffic schools, you can complete one section at a time, logging in and out in case you cannot dedicate a four-hour block of time to complete the course.

Learn French Fast – 7 Easy Tips

Learning a new language – especially French – can be a daunting task. If you want to supercharge your French learning abilities, consider the following seven tips on how to learn French fast:

1. Immerse Yourself in French – Nothing can accelerate your French learning like being totally immersed the language. Can’t afford a trip to Paris? Don’t worry! One hour a day, listen to French music, read a French newspaper, or watch a French movie. Consuming French media will help you get comfortable with the language – both how it is written and spoken.

2. Online Tool – Tools like Rocket French and Tell Me More French are specifically designed to help people trying to learn French quickly. Although there are a lot of tools available, my favourites are Rocket French, Tell Me More, and Fluenz.

3. Take a French Class – Many community colleges, public libraries, and adult education centers offer French classes are affordable prices. The hassle here of course is that you have to build your schedule around the class – instead of studying when you have the free time (my preferred method).

4. Watch Your favorite DVD’s in French – Most DVD’s come with multiple language translations available, including French. Watching your favourite movie in French instead of English can be a great way to pick up on the language. You may also consider leaving the English on but adding French subtitles which is a little easier.

5. Chat with French People – The internet can help you bridge language barriers, and talking with actual French speakers can really help you learn French fast It’s easy to find a chat partner who is as eager to learn English as you are to learn French. Email, message boards, instant messaging, and webcams are all great ways to communicate with the French.

6. Know the Difference Between French and English – When I first went to France, I kept comparing it to everything at home. Just like traveling, learning a new language will have to marveling in the differences. Being aware of the differences between French and English can help you flatten the learning curve and let you wrap your head around the language quicker. For example, both English and French have silent letters, but they are different in each language.

7. Learn at Your Own Pace – Nothing hinders my learning like stress. This is why I always tell people to take their time when they are learning French – find your own pace and stick to it. If you have the time to study French 8 hours a day, great. But most people don’t, so don’t feel bad if things feel like they are going slowly.

Over the Counter Reading Glasses – OK To Use Or Harmful?

As a practicing optometrist for twenty years now, one of the most common questions I am asked is “Can I use over-the-counter glasses or will they damage my eyes?”  The short answer to this question is yes (depending on one’s prescription); you can use these “drugstore” reading glasses without harming your eyes.  However, before you go out and buy a pair of these glasses for every drawer and nightstand in your house, you need to be aware of a few things.

First, a basic understanding of why people develop the need for reading glasses in the first place might be of interest.  As people approach the age of 40, they may begin to notice that their near vision is not what it was even a few years ago.  Indeed, once you enter your forties and progress into your early forties, you can expect to definitely have changes up close, requiring a spectacle (or contact lens) prescription.  (If you are near-sighted to begin with, you can simply remove your glasses at near to solve this near blur, but this is an issue for another article).

The question remains though, why do people need reading glasses around the age of forty?  This is actually the culmination of a process that starts pretty much the day you’re born.

Our ability to focus at different distances and to go from distance to near and vice versa comes from the crystalline lens.  The crystalline lens sits behind our pupils and can change shape to accommodate focusing at various distances.  As children and even young adults, this crystalline lens is very elastic which allows for tremendous focusing ability at near.

However, over time, the ability of the crystalline lens to change shape decreases.  This is a slow, yet fairly constant change.  As this process continues with every passing year, it eventually hits a threshold point at about the age of forty, give or take a few years, where your ability to focus at the typical reading distance of about 18-20 inches is impaired.

As you can see, this process is really just another ageing process.  Look at it this way:  Needing reading glasses due to this process doesn’t mean you are old; it just means you are “old enough”.  Perhaps looking at it in this way may make it slightly less depressing.

Furthermore, everybody experiences these vision changes, regardless of sex, race, or nationality.  So rest assured that the need for a reading prescription at around forty years of age is not unusual; in fact, it is the norm.

As for the over-the-counter (OTC), or drugstore, reading glasses, feel free to use these as needed.  Keep in mind, though, that people with a big difference in prescription between the two eyes and/or high amounts of astigmatism will not do well with these glasses.   You will also need to consult your eye care professional to help you determine what power lenses to select.

Of course you could also simply go into a store and try out a few difference powers until one that seems clear at your desired reading distance is found.  This latter choice is not recommended if, as a result, you skip routine checkups with your eye doctor.  Routine eye examinations can uncover potentially vision threatening conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration (to name just a couple).

Also, the optical quality of OTC glasses is often lacking.  But this cannot damage your eyes.  You may experience some discomfort and even headaches, but you will do no actual damage to your eyes.

So when you reach that “special” time in your life when you need reading glasses, don’t despair.  You are not old, just “old enough” and you are certainly not alone.  Also, feel free to use the OTC glasses, but be sure to continue having your routine eye exams.

Choosing Educational Toys For Your Kids

The main word that is in every kid’s mind is the word play. Toys are for them a fascinating world and you as parents are forced not only by your role, but also by your adorable little creatures to buy them some – at least- of the games they want, in order to enhance their entertaining times, but also their learning status. Toys do not have only a fun purpose, but in most cases they are an ideal way to promote the further development of your kids, enriching and encouraging their social and cognitive abilities.

The choice of the right toy that can stimulate the kid’s ability to understand easily the world that opens ahead of him is completely up to you as parents. It is important to understand that it is a crucial time for your kids’ development and try to create the most beneficiary and advantageous ambiance possible both for their mental and psychological growth. It is not difficult to create this environment, choosing the right games and toys, because these can have a really big impact on their education and overall intellectual atmosphere.

The most important thing you need to take under consideration is the specific abilities and weaknesses of you r kid. Not everyone has the same capabilities and interests, and not everyone needs the same amount of boosting, especially when it comes to some educational issues. It can be tricky at the beginning to recognize the special abilities of your kids, and more importantly to admit their limitations or problematic areas but if you do so effectively you can certainly choose the best for them and their personal growth. It is highly recommended to be in close interaction with them so as to observe and acknowledge everything you need.

If you are a bit hesitant or even confused on what you should really check when buying educational toys for your kids, here are some ideas for you. It is really important to keep some things in mind:

First of all you need to make sure that toys are safe, because safety comes first in any case. A durable and childproof toy is the best option, especially if your kid is still small.

The best toys are the ones that are easy to use, because if they are too complicated your kids might lose their interest really fast and stop enjoying the new toy, despite the fact that you paid a lot for it. Find the toy that fits your kids’ style and more importantly their interests, because that can be really determinative in convincing your kids to play with the particular toy.

Choose toys that enhance the social skills of your kids encouraging them to play either with you or their friends. Cooperation and healthy competition is something that they need to learn from a young age.

Always keep in mind that no matter how educational a toy is, if it’s not fun it won’t have the desired result. Always make sure that the toys feature the same amount of educational and fun levels.

Modern Assistance for Life’s Challenges From Free Life Coaching Courses to Age Old Wisdom

Modern technologies have played quite an important role in the majority of our daily activities and business dealings, and have opened up many new opportunities for making money and even dating. As technology advances and new applications are discovered, we can expect to see even more ways that technology can enhance our lives.

The information age has brought about some significant changes and not just in terms of electronic advances and new gadgets, but also in the way we deal with the challenges and trials that occur throughout our lives. While life’s speed bumps are nothing new, there are some new and very effective options for coping with them, and from a friend or a family member in an alcohol rehab center to advice on relationships or families, modern technologies are helping more and more everyday.

Life Coaching?

One of the most significant new trends to emerge for many people trying to deal with the modern problems of our brave new world is the employment of a life coach or participating in free life coaching courses. The modern life coach is like a literal guardian angel for just about any aspect of life from finances to relationships, and just about everything in between. While the concept may sound trivial to some, balancing the many different responsibilities and activities in the contemporary individual’s life can be quite a daunting task, particularly for those in their twenties and thirties.

Even those not in need a full-time coach can benefit greatly from just attending one of the many free life coaching courses now available online or in traditional gatherings. Most of us have at least one area of our personal or even professional lives that is need of improvement, and for the vast majority of us there are more than a few. Luckily, finding the key to balancing all of the areas of one’s life can often be a matter of perspective, and gaining that perspective can sometimes be as simple having your situation viewed through new eyes.

Using Technology for Some of Life’s Other Challenges

Life has a unique way of surprising people and changing lives with little or no warning, and there is no way that any one person can prepare or be expected to deal with each and every one of them on their own. Substance abuse, domestic or child abuse, marriage troubles, and more are all very trying issues, and having some insight and advice from those that have experienced the same things is priceless during these situations.

The global reach of the Internet has enabled anyone with a connection to the web the ability to find the right words, meaning, or answers to just about any of the challenges we face in life, and it is often just knowing that others have made it through the same or worse is enough to help get you through. Entire online self-help groups and Internet communities are now available, many with twenty-four hour attendees, that are specifically there to help others during time of turmoil and difficulty, and can often be the easiest first step to finding help and support.

Depression Among College Students – An Essay

Depression among college students, with a focus on Freshmen.

Who is at risk, and what can be done?

Graduation time rolls around, and you already know where you will end up next year for college. Your two best friends will be joining you there, where you will all live in the same apartment complex. You have already put your first payment, and deposit in preparation. Now you wait.

When the time comes around, you pack up and move thousands of miles just to go to college. You haven’t heard from either of your friends yet, and you can feel the anticipation welling in your gut. You are so excited, you haven’t heard from them all summer.
Then you find out they never came. Both decided on going to a different college without you, or telling you. You keep telling yourself you will cope, and make new friends, but you still feel lonely and rejected.
Once you are actually in college, things are harder than you expected. You don’t have a car, so it is harder to get around buying food, finding a bank, and getting school supplies. Often times you find yourself taking naps, or just sleeping, because you can’t focus, or feel overwhelmed. One of the many signs of depression.

Money is tight, and you don’t have a job, because you can’t find any job openings within walking distance, you are afraid to ride the bus, because it is such a big city, compared to the one you came from. You biggest fear is getting lost, and not being able to make it home.

You often times feel overwhelmed by homework and such. You can never do it quite good enough, and are often times to shy to ask for help, so you sit in silence, confused, and helpless, like a grain of sand on a beach. Not noticed and not much potential.

This is the story of a college freshman. Probably many. That guy who sits next to you in math class, struggling with theorems, or that girl in your chem. class, under pressure to learn her Periodic Table of Elements. Who ever it is, they are there.

Depression effects 76 out of a 100 college students. Mainly freshmen entering a new world so to speak. Often times you won’t see it right away or not at all. This is an age group that’s tricky, states a psychologist at Davidson College in North Carolina, DeWitt Crosby said, They are adults by law, but they’re still dealing with making decisions on their own.

More attention is spent on alcohol consumption, and crimes among students, so that little energy or money is left for the awareness or the treatment of mental health. Often times the only funding is for counselors who will perform â scattershot therapy. They don’t actually treat what is wrong, but try to cover many possibilities of what could be wrong within a short period of time.

USA TODAY states in a recent study 14% of the 701 students who took a survey in the Boston area showed significant symptoms of depression, and over half of them could qualify as having major depression. If treatment of the depression was sought, at least 80% would get better.

The National Survey of Counseling Center Directors reported an 85% increase in severe psychological problems over the past five years. Also 30% reported at least one student suicide on their campus within the last (2001/2002) school year.

A hard part in treating depression is recognizing it. Some major symptoms of depression as told by are as follows.

1. Sadness, anxiety, or empty feelings

2· Decreased energy, fatigue, being slowed down

3. Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities

4.· Sleep Disturbances (insomnia, oversleeping, or waking much earlier than usual)

5· Appetite and weight changes (either loss or gain)

6· Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, and worthlessness

7· Thoughts off death or suicide, or suicide attempts

8· Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering

9· Irritability or excessive crying

10 · Chronic aches and pains not explained by another physical condition

It’s normal to have these feelings at one time or another, but five or more, for a two week or longer period is something to pay attention too. Also watch for changes in the way the person functions. The anxiety is normal in college, when you are studying for classes, or preparing to take a test, but when it rules your life, and they way you think and act is a time to seek help and gain control again.

Personal Career Coaching – How to Fast Track Your Career in Record Time

Personal career coaching can help you in various ways and I’m going to go over some things right now that you can do to help you advance your career in record time. Some of the things that you need to know is that most employees don’t really have clearly defined goals for what position they would like to move up to. If you simply write down what it is that you want and what position you want and by when, you will increase your chances of getting promoted over others easily by over 50%. You should note that most people who are not happy at work are not happy because they have no ambition. I am proud of you because you have ambition and you have proved it to me by reading this article!

My personal career coaching is for those who really want to make a change in their lives. Those who look around and see that there are companies that make people wait years and years for advancement and then offer it to some new kid out of college. There is a reason why you have not been promoted yet. One of the reasons is that you simply have not created a plan to get where you want. The hard truth is that there are just some positions that you will never be able to get no matter how much planning you do. You need to learn quickly how to weed these out and focus on the ones that you can do. Forget about being realistic because of the great example from the Wright brothers. Flying in their day was not realistic but they did it and now it’s an everyday occurrence!

Personal career coaching is for those who understand that you can leverage off of other people’s mistakes to advance your career without having to try to figure out everything on your own. How nice would it be to be able to call someone who has done what you are trying to do who will answer any question that you have so you can avoid unnecessary pain? I know how hard it is to figure out how to get to the top because there are so many people clawing and fighting for what you want. If the position that you have your eye on is any good, you can bet that there are many others who are also gunning for this position and you’ve got some competition on your hands. Don’t look at the other competitors and rule yourself out because you think they are more qualified or you think the boss likes them more, no instead look at yourself and how you can get where you want to go. Think about it, there is always someone more qualified, thank God this is not what is necessary to get raises!

Another way that you can benefit from personal career coaching is the fact that you now have someone Else’s experience working for you. Make sure that if you do decide to work with a career coach, that this person has experience doing what it is you want to do. I’d make sure that they are easily reachable and that there is a way to be able to ask them questions and get them answered in a timely manner. People that hire career coaches usually beat out others for the job, it’s just that simple. I’ve prepared some cutting edge techniques to advance your career below, enjoy!

Black Education – A Lit Candle in Darkness

Black education among slaves was illegal, period. Slave holders could not risk slaves discovering documents like the Declaration of Independence or the United States Constitution. For most slave holders, even allowing slaves to learn to read the bible seemed too risky to allow. Can you imagine? Brilliant black minds trapped for nearly 300 years by laws and attitudes that considered them subhuman and too feeble-minded to learn anyway.

By the time slavery ended in 1865, black people were desperate for education. They wanted to learn from anyone they could. John Hope Franklin gives an excellent account of this in his book, From Slavery to Freedom. Makeshift schools sprang up, taught by anyone who had even the most rudimentary levels of reading and writing. Classes were jam packed with former slaves of all ages.

Most of the four million former slaves remained in the South on the same plantations where they had been slaves. Without land, shelter, food, extra clothing, education or even a general sense of where they were in the county or parish, for most, staying put seemed the intelligent thing to do, especially with white vigilante groups looking for loose blacks to kill out of spite for having lost the war. It is easy to see that in this environment even a makeshift school was dangerous. Being a black teacher at one of these schools, for many, was fatal.

Beginning in 1865, for nearly three years, the federal government did assist former slaves after the war through the Freedmen’s Bureau. By 1868, however, federal funding for the bureau was stripped to its barest minimum, struggling along until 1872 when it ended. According to Dr. John Hope Franklin, “By 1870, when educational work of the bureau stopped, there were 247,333 pupils in 4,329 schools.” The Bureau had spent nearly $5 million on educating former slaves, establishing institutions like Howard University and Fisk University, but this was not nearly enough. Former slaves were left to educate themselves the best way they could under extremely harsh conditions. The Compromise of 1877, in order to settle the dispute over the U.S. presidency, allowed for the governmental withdrawal of U.S. troops from the South in exchange for officially electing Rutherford B. Hayes as president. The troops had helped to protect former slaves from vengeful whites. Without the troops, segregation laws and fiendish practices of law enforcement quickly spread throughout the South.

Despite the threats of violence, blacks continued to risk their lives to become educated. Most black communities had no funding, meaning they were free to create their own curricula. Quite often this included oral histories passed down throughout slavery from memories of Africa. Yet, we must not forget the power of self-hatred that nearly 300 years of slavery had taught. Nor should we forget the power of the forbidden — books. The only book that most blacks had was the bible and it was sacred. For them, did this mean that all books were sacred regardless of what was in them, including words that proclaimed their African memories as lies?

In order to establish legitimate facilities for educating black people, funding had to come from somewhere and with it came a curriculum already in place, bleached of African contributions to civilization. From that point on, a systematized, Western curriculum, dominated by white interpreters, became the standard for black education as it remains today.
